Eek a Leak!

I had my first ostomy-related wardrobe malfunction yesterday, big shout out to my body for waking me up before it got messy!!

The part of my stomach below my appliance has a little roll when I sit down and sometimes my wafer seems like it melts into it, I don’t even know how to explain it, but it’s always kind of worried me for leak potential.  Yesterday morning I woke up before my alarm and had a little itch below my stoma and then I felt it, wetness. Eeek! My first leak (and hopefully my last!).  I grabbed my bag of supplies and headed to the bathroom to investigate.  Fortunately, it wasn’t a stool leakage, it was more like the eakin seal and/or wafer melting/dripping out from under the adhesive.  Weird right? What’s more, I had just talked to a WOCN the day previous about my concern but I’m not sure I described my worries well and don’t think she quite understood. I shocked myself with how calm I remained and while I hope it doesn’t happen again, the experience has helped build my confidence and for that I am grateful.

  1. It has happened a half a dozen times to me over the past 5 years. Once with a coworker and once on a dance floor. Very embarassing but you get over it and learn from it. I think the key to all this is for you to control it and not let “it” control you. 🙂

    1. Oh man, on a dance floor? That does sound embarrassing. I agree – we’re in charge! Even if it wins sometimes. Reminds you to stay humble, huh.
