When I was faced with the prospect of ostomy surgery, finding information about what my life would be like was not an easy task. After surgery I continued scouring the internet and decided all of the information I was finding in different places needed to be in one, easy-to-navigate place. Newbie Ostomy is the culmination of all of that research; the place I wish existed when I was new to the ostomy world.
Am I in the right place?
You are in the right place if you or someone you know has an ostomy, or is having surgery that may result in an ostomy.
I’m in the right place, but I’m still not sure what an ostomy is…
An ostomy is a condition where a portion of intestine is brought through the abdomen to the outside for the collection of bodily waste. The term “stoma” refers to the opening where the intestine meets the outside world. The three most common types of ostomies are ileostomy (bowel waste), colostomy (bowel waste), and urostomy (urine).
Sounds like there’s a lot to learn about ostomies, where should I get started?
You can start anywhere, there’s a ton of information to fill your brain with. I encourage you to peruse the menu at the top of this page to pick a place to start exploring, or to click on an image below.
