Expelling Mucous (and sometimes blood) out of your anus can be scary!
If your surgeon left part of your rectum and anus in, whether it be for a possible reversal, or for other reasons, the part they left in you will still be alive and functioning – it just won’t be hooked up to anything. Alive and functioning means still producing mucous, and if you have IBD and are flaring up, you may also lose blood and have urgency. Some people pass mucous rarely, others pass it everyday, and others feel the build up but have trouble passing it and use an enema to encourage it to come out (speak with your doctor before doing this). Passing mucous is totally normal and nothing to freak out about. If you pass blood, it’s good to let your doctor know and keep an eye on it. If it starts to be a lot, you might be at risk for anemia.
