In general, people who have an ostomy with a tendency toward liquid output use drainable ostomy pouches. This would be ileostomies, urostomies, and transverse colostomies.

Benefits of drainable ostomy pouches

You can empty the same pouch multiple times without having to change it. This is really handy for a person with an urostomy or ileostomy because they often empty 6+ times per day and that would be a lot of pouches to carry around, dispose of, pay for, and get approved by insurance. Think, 180+ per month?!

Often, persons with a colostomy will use a closed-end pouch. These are typically one time use, though there are “pouch liners” you can order, allowing you to use the same closed-end or drainable pouch for multiple empties.

Benefits of closed-end ostomy pouches

A closed-end pouch is handy for quick, easy disposing of your waste. Especially if you’re wearing a two piece system, you just pull off the pouch and switch it out for a new one, leaving the baseplate in place. Then, throw the old one in a sealable plastic bag and throw it away. Closed-end pouches can be handy for people with looser output on some occasions, such as when participating in physical activities, going on long hikes or running marathons, and camping. Having the closed-end pouch when doing any of those activities allows you to quickly change your pouch and “pack-out” your waste if you’re not at a location with a bathroom. Just make sure you double bag the sealable bag you’re throwing it away in for safe-keeping.
