Call each ostomy appliance manufacturer and ask for a sample of their product. They’ll probably ask you some questions to make sure they send you the right type of pouch. Make sure you know the answers to these questions:

  • What kind of ostomy do you have?
  • How big is your stoma? (usually knowing this in mm or inches is good)
  • Is it flush to your skin or does it stick out an inch?

They might also ask you preference questions like this:

  • Do you prefer drainable or closed end?
  • What kind of drainable closure do you like?
  • Do you want a filter?
  • Do you prefer a clear pouch or opaque (not see-through)?

If you don’t know your pouching preferences yet, let them know that and see if they’ll send you a couple different options. Many manufacturers have ostomy nurses on staff who can talk to you and give you some guidance if you’re feeling extra lost.
